The accelerating shift as major employers drop degree requirements in favor of demonstrated skills.

Parallel Shifts

Change is occurring in the employment landscape, where more employers—motivated by the Great Resignation and difficulties locating qualified talent—are beginning to look past educational credentials when searching for workers. However, many employers remain committed to using the college degree as the primary indicator of job readiness, despite evidence suggesting this approach has not produced optimal results. Research conducted prior to the pandemic demonstrated that approximately eighty percent of Human Resource leaders struggled to locate employees possessing the necessary skills. The situation deteriorated significantly by 2022. Nearly half, or forty-seven percent, of businesses reported having positions they could not fill, surpassing the forty-eight-year historical average. The United States currently has approximately eleven point four million vacant positions, many of which do not require a degree. The economic consequences and effects on family and business stability resulting from these numerous unfilled roles are substantial and wide-ranging.

Simultaneously, Generation Z individuals are expressing skepticism about the traditional high school-to-college pathway while remaining uncertain about navigating alternative postsecondary education options. Undergraduate enrollment declined by six hundred sixty-two thousand students between spring 2021 and spring 2022, representing a 4.7 percent reduction, with enrollment dropping 1.4 million since the pandemic commenced. A recent survey revealed that high school students’ likelihood of attending four-year institutions fell by nearly twenty percent within a single year. Despite this trend, when planning their post-secondary futures, young people typically continue defaulting to the college-or-bust mentality. For numerous individuals, the cultural belief that college degrees represent peak achievement remains so ingrained that alternative pathways never receive consideration. One Generation Z respondent shared this perspective: “We never even brought up the fact of not wanting to go to college.”
